FGV Art will open its doors on September 11, 2023, with an exhibition and the launch of a book on constructive generations in 21st century art.

FGV Art will be a space for artistic appreciation and experimentation and for contemporary debates on art and culture, seeking to encourage dialogue with the most creative and heterogeneous sectors of society. Located in FGV’s main building, the initiative seeks to connect the institution’s own schools through artistic projects. The initiative will also include seminars, methodological workshops and practical training courses for the arts.

The inaugural exhibition, titled “The Fourth Constructive Generation in Rio de Janeiro” and curated by Paulo Herkenhoff, will run free of charge until November. On the opening day, at 5 p.m., the book “Rio XXI Vertentes Construtivas” (“Constructive Strands in 21st Century Rio”) will be launched. As well as organizing this book, Herkenhoff oversaw its editorial design, together with artist and graphic designer Fernando Leite. The book is the second volume in a collection, which began with “Rio XXI Vertentes Contemporâneas” (“Contemporary Strands in 21st Century Rio”), launched in 2019.

FGV’s relationship with contemporary art was revived in 2012, when it started to publish works on various aspects of art and design, such as the book “Móvel brasileiro moderno” (“Modern Brazilian furniture.”) “Back in the 1940s, FGV ran a pioneering course in the artistic field, which provided specialized training for the graphic sector, which was booming at the time. FGV Art revives the institution’s tradition of supporting art, seeking to encourage and further develop the cultural sector in Rio de Janeiro,” says FGV president Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal. “This new space is important, as it will promote multidisciplinary dialogue, which is part of FGV’s mission.”

“FGV Art is part of an important movement to revitalize Rio de Janeiro,” says Sidnei Gonzalez, one of the project’s promoters. “The new space aims to support contemporary art in Rio and Brazil as a whole. A place for producing knowledge, prospecting for new artists and promoting dialogue, FGV Art will be integrated into the city, highlighting one of its great distinctive features: the artistic sector and its creative engagement.”
