Amazon Week 2026 in Brussels
On June 3rd, during the seminar “Just Transition in the Amazon” during Amazon Week 2026 in Brussels, Prof. Dr. Cesar Cunha Campos reflected on one of the most important questions of our time:
How can we ensure that the transition to a sustainable and climate-resilient economy also improves the living conditions of Amazonian populations?
The Amazon is far more than the world’s largest tropical rainforest. It is a strategic global asset, essential for climate regulation, biodiversity conservation, water security, and sustainable development. Home to more than 30 million people and over 300 Indigenous groups, the region combines extraordinary natural wealth with unique social and cultural diversity.
A just transition requires us to move beyond the notion that environmental protection and economic development are competing objectives. The long-term preservation of the forest depends on creating sustainable economic opportunities capable of generating income, employment, and prosperity for local communities.
The Amazon offers remarkable opportunities in sectors such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, sustainable agriculture, food systems, cosmetics, and nature-based solutions.
Advances in science and technology, combined with the invaluable traditional knowledge of Indigenous peoples and local communities, are opening new pathways for sustainable growth.
In this context, the dialogue between Brazil and Europe is more important than ever.
Both regions share a strong commitment to climate action and sustainable development. Europe contributes with expertise in sustainable value chains, bioeconomy solutions, and responsible investment. Brazil brings unparalleled biodiversity, scientific excellence, and deep territorial knowledge.
This partnership goes beyond cooperation, it is about co-creation: combining complementary strengths to develop innovative, inclusive, and sustainable solutions that can benefit both people and the planet.
