INTEGRATED LIVESTOCK DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY FOR MAURITANIA

The Mauritania Project represents a large-scale, highly complex agro-industrial initiative designed to transform food production in the country through sustainable, technological, and self-sufficient solutions. By combining beef cattle operations, poultry farming, cold storage, slaughtering, and processing, the project aims to consolidate an integrated model for the production of animal proteins and related products, with a strong focus on food security, productive efficiency, and the valorization of local resources.

In the livestock segment, a complete breeding, rearing, and finishing system will be implemented for Nelore cattle, designed to produce 14,254 head per year for slaughter. The choice of the Nelore breed is justified by its excellent adaptation to tropical climates and strong zootechnical performance. Production will rely on intensive pasture management, crop–livestock integration, artificial insemination for genetic improvement, and final feedlot finishing with diets based on grains and roughage produced on the farm itself. Feed self-sufficiency will be ensured through an on-site feed mill integrated with the farm’s agricultural system.

In poultry production, the project includes a broiler production complex with a slaughter capacity of 10 million birds per year, encompassing multiple stages: breeder farms, fertile egg production units, hatcheries, grow-out farms, a feed mill, and a modern slaughterhouse. This industrial structure will allow full control of the birds’ life cycle, from genetics to final processing, in compliance with international standards for quality, sanitary safety, and animal welfare.

To ensure the preservation of perishable products and enable efficient distribution, two strategic cold storage facilities will be built. The first, located in Nouakchott, will have a capacity of 1,800 tons (900 tons of meat and 900 tons of fruits and vegetables), while the second, in Rosso, will have a capacity of 200 tons, equally divided between meat and horticultural products. Both facilities will be 100% sustainable, operating with solar energy and modern environmental control systems.

The project also includes the construction of cattle slaughterhouses across the country, with a capacity of 60 head per day in Nouakchott and 10 regional units with a capacity of 6 head per day each, all aligned with international standards and halal slaughter requirements. As a strategy to add value to by-products, bovine tallow will be converted into biodiesel to supply project power generators and logistics vehicles, ensuring greater energy independence.

Finally, a tannery will be established in Nouakchott, with a processing capacity of 691 tons of hides per year, operating on a continuous basis (24/7) using solar energy and battery storage systems. The tannery will serve as a benchmark for efficiency, traceability, and environmental sustainability.

By combining technological innovation, environmental responsibility, and the strengthening of the local value chain, the Mauritania Project stands as a milestone in the region’s agro-industrial development, contributing to job creation, enhanced food security, and the establishment of a new productive model aligned with global sustainability challenges.
